Genuine connectedness in the vulnerable meeting with another’s mental distress
As a therapist, as an author, and as person I am particularly occupied with the prerequisites for connectedness: What hinders and what fosters genuine, human connection in a professional setting? In a personal setting? In a group?
One hindrance for the kind of compassionate, healing connectedness that is the hallmark of mentally healing practices, is professionalized distance. If your title enters the room before you do, you’re already distancing that which may make the suffering person feel seen and heard. The unspoken power differentials in human social interactions tend to skew healing relations. I have massive experience challenging those differentials, and in empowering both professionals and people with lived experiences to pursue better options.
Depsychiatrization and recontextualization
The psychiatric approach to an understanding of mental distress is worrying to put things mildly. There’s ample reason to think that – even though psychiatrization may yield some diagnostical relief (naming the pain), the long term impacts of both medicalization, treatment and of a pathologized self-identity tend to cause more harm and invalidation than healing and functionality. That’s the reason why the process that KUBA calls depsychiatrization can facilitate mental healing and the reconstitution of self efficacy and self worth.
